Uses of Isopropyl Ether
Diisopropyl ether is an excellent solvent for animal, vegetable, and mineral oils, and can be used to extract nicotine from tobacco. It is also an effective solvent for waxes and resins, and is commonly blended with other solvents in industrial dewaxing processes for paraffin-based oil products.
As a solvent, isopropyl ether is widely used in pharmaceuticals, smokeless gunpowder, coatings, and paint cleaning. Due to its high octane number and antifreeze properties, it can be blended into gasoline as an additive. However, it tends to form explosive peroxides when agitated, so stabilizers such as p-benzylaminophenol are often added to mitigate this risk.
Compared to ethyl ether, diisopropyl ether has milder anesthetic effects but longer duration. It is also employed as a solvent for concentrating and recovering dilute acetic or butyric acid solutions, and serves as an extraction solvent for sodium thiocyanate in wet-process acrylic fiber production.
Additionally, it is used as a standard reference material in chromatography, as an extraction agent, and in organic synthesis.
